GlasMug and the semi-live Stevenote

Or the next best thing to being there…

It is less than a week to go to the MacWorld San Francisco Keynote, or Stevenote as it is affectionately known. At the time of writing, five days, three hours and forty-five minutes to be precise. Less than a week before queuing patiently on the sidewalk outside waiting for the doors to open, running down the escalators into the deepest bowels of Moscone South, then waiting patiently in the corridors leading to the Ballroom, during which time one must sit cross-legged on the floor balancing your MacBook on your knees, desperately trying to get connected to a wireless network so that you can either blog about being in the line for the keynote, or read the blogs of others who are similarly in line for the keynote, or read the many rumor sites in a frantic attempt to find out what you’re about to find out in a few hours anyway. If you’re really lucky you’ll be able to find one prediction that will come true in which case you can turn to your neighbor during the actual keynote with a knowing smile to say that you knew that particular product or application was coming all along. The more dedicated bloggers in line will be easily identified by the MacBook Pro held above their heads so they can capture the line in full motion video using the built-in iSight.

But if you’re not going to actually be at the Keynote, where better place to hang out than the second meeting of GlasMug? Yes, the Glasgow Mac Users’ Group is holding its second meeting in Scotsys’ shiny new Apple Premium Reseller premises on Great Western Road in Glasgow. By a miraculous coincidence, Apple chose to hold their keynote on the very same evening that GlasMug were meeting and, thanks to the timezone difference, we should be in time to either watch, read, or listen to some live commentary — official or otherwise — from the keynote, or just wait until it is over and continually refresh the apple.com page until we find out what’s new. Either way it should be a lot of fun, not least due to the dress code which mandates black turtle-necks and blue jeans — bottle of water optional but highly recommended.

Read more about the first meeting and arrangements for this second meeting. Newcomers are more than welcome, especially those who comply with the dress code.

[Update] Would have helped if I mentioned the time it started at… Meet and greet starts at 19:00, Tuesday 9 January 2007, the hideously optimistic plan for getting some form of webcast is by 19:30, expected end is at 21:30, but to be honest it could go on longer! There are rumors of pizza and soft drinks to keep everyone going.
